17 brands run by 3 major companies go cage-free in Asia and Peru

Seventeen brands run by three major companies in Asia and Latin America announced that they are going cage-free after dialogues with Sinergia Animal and partner organizations. Acurio Restaurantes (Peru), Chatrium Hotels and Residences (Thailand, Myanmar, and Japan), and Toridoll (Indonesia) have all published cage-free policies to be deployed throughout their supply chains.

The Peruvian company Acurio Restaurantes owns nine brands alone: Astrid y Gastón, Tanta, Chicha, Papachos, La Mar, Panchita, El Bodegón, Me late chocolate, and Barra Chalaca. All of the Acurio brands have committed to only using eggs from cage-free systems in their twenty-two locations around the country. The announcement was made after conversations with Sinergia Animal and ARBA, and the transition is set to be fully completed by 2025.

In Asia, our efforts with Open Wing Alliance successfully resulted in a major announcement by Toridoll at the beginning of September. The multinational corporation behind Wok to Walk, Marugame Udon, Boat Noodle, Shoryu, Tamjay Samgor, Pokeworks, and Monster Curry committed to phasing out eggs from battery cages by 2030. The decision applies to the seven brands and their entire supply chain in Indonesia.

The Chatrium Hotels and Residences also took an important step toward their vision of sustainable hospitality. With seven locations throughout Thailand, Myanmar, and Japan, the international company shared with guests their decision to source 100% of their eggs (shell, liquid, and egg products) from cage-free facilities in all operations owned and franchised by them.

This is good news for millions of chickens farmed in these five countries. Battery cages are considered one of the cruelest practices in animal farming. In these intensive systems, laying hens are unable to perform many of their natural behaviors, such as spreading their wings completely, pecking, and nesting. Due to the extreme confinement, they experience high stress levels and are much more susceptible to the development of painful illnesses.

Sinergia Animal uses dialogue, negotiations, and awareness campaigns to encourage major food companies to adopt cage-free policies in their supply chains.
